When Steve Varner was asked to come up with a more “toyetic” version of the black and white comic book team of adolescent turtles, he worked strictly from the comic books as reference. He produced one simple rough “sketch” of a turtle in clay and cast a small number of copies to show to Playmates as well as Eastman and Laird as a concept pitch for size and scale. Very little was changed from this original design to the final product. A number of copies were given to the toy company to test paint and colour variants, so only a few original copies remained at Varner studios, which dwindled to a handful over the years. This is one of those last few remanding hardcopies found in Varner’s archives, so this is as close to an original turtle as you are going to get.
